Read dog food labels
J.M. Smucker Company withdrew some shipments of several varieties of wet canned Gravy Train, Kibble ‘N Bits, Skippy and Ol’ Roy brands. Trace amounts of the drug, pentobarbital which is used for euthanasia of pets have been found. The company found that 60 percent of their test sample, tested positive. My story source comes from the Associated Press and was published in the business section of the Press Democrat on February 15 or 16 in the business section.
Luckily, this company has a policy of zero tolerance for even trace amounts of this drug. But long ago, I learned that euthanized pets end up in pet food. At a time when we had lost our beloved dog, Nabisco, a veterinarian mentioned that if I did not pay the higher fee to ensure we received his remains that his ashes would be mixed with other pets.
Worst of all, I heard that the remains of pets get processed into pet food. Meat products and meat-by products cover this type of unwanted animal remains. I felt shocked.
Since we didn’t want just any pet’s ashes, I indicated that only the ashes of our dog, Nabisco, be returned. This meant a separate cremation, thus twice the price fee.
Why am I not surprised that a major dog food is withdrawn over concerns about euthanasia drug? Do you know what you are paying for when you buy a pet food? Do you read pet treat labels? Any meat-by products in your dog’s food?
Do you know what’s in your dog’s food?
