Give books to children who want to read

This photograph comes from my past. I believe it shows a love of reading and dogs.

We may believe books are affordable to all

Nothing could be further from the truth. We need to get out of our own cultural and life bubble and see the shelterless in our own nation, states, cities and towns.

Growing up my mother’s family had only a bible, so she loved to go to school where she could run her fingertips over the pages and learn to read.

A rescue failure? Consider what is best for the dog

Unfortunately, the Bay Area rescue dog pictured above,did not fit for our family. We lived in a multi-story house with too many stairs.

It did not help that the rescue volunteer misjudged this dog’s age by five years!

Sadly after a week in our home I returned him. Just in those few days, we had become attached to Buddha. A visit to our Vet assured me that the dog’s true age showed in his mouth because after about age eight, most adult dogs lose a specific tooth. Buddha’s teeth had that pair of teeth missing. Plus short-legged Buddha had zero chance of making our daily dose of dozens of stairs.

Reading literary fiction, literally, boosts our brains!

So skip the cheap thriller and read something great like The Giver or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Read any book by Barbara Kingsolver, Margaret Atwood, Barry Unsworth, Andrew Sean Greer, Maxine Hong Kingston or Amy Tan.
